Alderman Samuel Soref, only Jewish member of the common council, the city’s governing body, is being boomed for mayor by a number of taxpayers and unemployed in the current campaign to recall Mayor Daniel W. Hoan, veteran chief executive of Milwaukee.

Soref, who has been an outstanding independent in the council, attached neither to the Socialist nor non-partisan (anti-Socialist) factions in that body, was asked to run for the mayoralty by the Milwaukee Unemployed Union and delegates of several taxpayers’ groups.

Soref, however, refused flatly and instead praised Mayor Hoan highly. The recall agitation was started by taxpayers’ organizations angry at Mayor Hoan’s refusal to cut the salaries of city employees further. Petitions for the recall are now being circulated.
