American Composer Refuses to Direct Berlin Orchestra

The refusal of Werner Janssen, American composer, to act as guest leader of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in December on account of the Nazi atrocity program, has evoked warning from the management of the orchestra that it will “make trouble” for him. On account of the recent refusal on the part of other famous artists who have declined invitations to appear in Germany, Mr. Janssen’s action has caused consternation among musicians here.
