General Jan Smuts, famous South African statesman, has issued an earnest appeal to the people of South Africa to discourage spread of the “sinister and dangerous anti-Semitism” originating abroad and being spread here. There has been much agitation here in recent weeks by Nazi agents and a widespread, underground campaign against the Jews by Nazi agents has been detected.
South Africa is trying to escape the “unhappy racialism which is a poisonous weed and not desired,” General Smuts declared. He warned those taking part in engendering racial hatreds that they would be to blame in the event of any trouble.
