Mary Pershonok, a Jewess who is a citizen of the United States and said to be employed in New York, was arrested in Santa Clara when she visited a factory where a strike was in progress. Suspicion that the young woman was engaged in Communist agitation was given as the reason for the arrest.
The case aroused a great deal of interest because the woman is an American citizen. Among those working for her release are the local Jewish center, the American Consul and the National Council of Jewish Women in New York. Colonel Fulgencio Batista, who is head ofthe army, has also promised to investigate the matter, and has ordered that the arrested woman be brought to Havana.
Moses Raigorodsky, a Jewish student in Havana, was also arrested on a similar is demanding his deportation as an undesiable citizen. The student council of the University of Havana and the Anti-Imperialist League are defending Raigorodsky and seeking his release.
