LONDON (Jan. 24)
Possibility that Great Britain may join in a vigorous protest to Germany against Nazi activities against the Dollfuss government in Austria was seen here tonight following a Foreign Office statement that Germany’s reply to Austria’s protest would be awaited. British aid in the Austrian struggle for maintenance of autonomy was sought yesterday by the Austrian ambassador in an interview with Sir John Simon, Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
Reviewing the situation in Austria today, the Austrian diplomat is belived to have described to the British official the terroristic campaign which Austrian followers of Hitler have embarked upon and to have warned against an attempted putsch.
Austria, practically helpless in the face of an internal attack supported and sponsored by Germany, is contemplating an appeal to the League of Nations for protection against the Nazis. If a reply is not received from Berlin within the next few days, the appeal will be made to Geneva although the value of such a step is doubtful.
