Berlin (Feb. 6)
Fritz Engel, German Jewish poet, novelist and movie writer, died here today. He was sixty-eight years old. Born in Berlin, he spent practically all his life in that city. On his graduation from the University of Berlin, he began to write for the press.
A prolific writer, he turned out feuilletons, sketches and humorous verse for the Berliner Tageblatt and other German papers. In addition, he wrote for serious reviews and the stage, and later for the movies. Several of his poems, particularly “Outside There Is War,” and “We Are Young,” are included in all German anthologies of war poems.
Dr. Engel was also active in German Jewish affairs and was a member of the executive committee of the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith.
