The Jewish Press of Omaha, Neb., in an editorial signed by Uri Miller, praises The Jewish Daily Bulletin for asking the Histadruth for an accounting of the funds collected in America.

The Jewish Daily Bulletin has had the nerve—the paper writes—to take issue with the Histadruth concerning its annual fundraising drives. It has questioned the justification of the appeal and has pointed out that funds collected from all Jewry are used to maintain anti-religious schools and strengthen the party. It has had the audacity to demand through its editorial department an accounting.

We give praise to The Bulletin, not so much for the specific details of the charges, though we believe they are essentially correct—but we are thrilled at the idea of an Anglo-Jewish newspaper having the courage to criticize an American-Jewish organization.

If ever there was a collection of insipid, sweet nothings, it is the editorials of the Anglo-Jewish Press. Every organization is wonderful and a constructive force in American Judaism and cultural and religious Judaism is constantly being saved by the tremendous positive labors of hundreds of Jewish agencies. A reader of the editorial columns alone would have a picture of the first Jewish group Israel has ever seen in all its history of the greatest scholars and the finest self-sacrificing altruistic laity. The truth that knowledge of matters Jewish has reached an all-time low, that abuses have multiplied as never before in American Jewish organizations, is scrupulously kept out of every newspaper. Newspapers have to make money, and truth is damned if it gets in the way.

So we praise The Jewish Daily Bulletin. Long life and much strength to its refreshing editorial columns. Perhaps its example will put backbone in the Anglo-Jewish press.

‘REAL MASTERS’ AND HITLER

The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle, commenting on Hitler’s second anniversary of power says:

The fact that Hitler has survived and will probably continue to bear the title of Reichsfuehrer may be attributed more to the realization that the so-called Nazi revolution was not a revolution at all but an attempted reversion to the imperialistic rule before the ill-fated Republic. With the complete abandonment of the “socialist” part of the National-Socialist or Nazi platform, about the only real thing that distinguishes Hitler from the former Kaiser is the anti-Jewish monstrosity. There is no longer any Brown Shirt army.

Even the black-uniformed special Nazi guards have been “liquidated,” and the only armed force in the Reich is the regular army. The economic government of the nation is firmly in the hands of the special-privileged industrial interests where it always was. Hitler has dismissed his chief Nazi economic adviser, the man who taught him the Nazi philosophy. Herr Schacht is now the economic dictator and Schacht always was one of the big financial leaders. Hitler will remain in nominal power only so long as he obeys his real masters who have always been the real masters of Germany.

PROSKAUER HITS AT BOYCOTT

The New York World-Telegram, in its series of interviews on the boycott of German goods in the United States, quotes former Supreme Court Justice Joseph M. Proskauer as saying:

“First, the boycott is objectionable because of its complete ineffectiveness — to accomplish the result sought.

“Second, it is contrary to the express wish, given in confidence and without the duress of fear, of the leading Jews of Germany. It furnishes another, though fake, reason for Hitler to talk about international Jewish warfare against Germany and thus solidify his support. It delays the return of reason and decency to Germany.

“Third, its incidence is completely beyond control, and its destructive effect falls squarely on many Jewish manufacturers and merchants.

“As American citizens it is our absolute right and duty to help our fellow Jews by appeal to our own government, asking that it take diplomatic measures, and by appeal to the forces of public opinion, which are the court of last resort in such matters.

“But we have no moral right to bind ourselves as a separate group inside the United States to disturb the economic and diplomatic relations between America and a country with which America is at peace, no matter how much we may abhor the government policies of that country.

“There are held in America tens of millions of dollars of German obligations, and there are further trade relations involving many millions of dollars more. No group of citizens has a moral or patriotic right to interfere with these obligations except by appeal to the duly constituted authority of the United States government.”

CHARGES AGENCY SENDS BIASED NEWS

Dr. I. Schwartzbard, president of the World Union of General Zionists, in an article in the Polish Jewish Daily Chwila, published in Lwow, accuses the official press bureau of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem of disseminating tendencious news to harm the General Zionists. Dr. Schwartzboard writes:

The readers of the Zionist press know what “Palcor” is. But those who do not know should be told. It is a press bureau under the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem. From there a communication was issued recently, rousing public opinion and saying that the ship of the League (World League of General Zionists) is sinking. What an air of friendly worry the communication exudes! “Palcor” actually fears a catastrophe!

Is it fitting that the official telegraphic agency of the Jewish Agency disseminate to the world tendencious bulletins? The bulletins reveal joy because of the difficulties of the league. A joy which is badly disguised! We merely ask this as a matter of course—of the Executive?
