The Dean of Durham, writing in the London Daily Telegraph on the religious genius of the Jews, says:

It is impossible to exaggerate the religious debt which we owe to the Jewish race, though it is quite possible to maintain that we have borrowed from them more than we need have taken, and have paid a somewhat heavy interest in the disproportionate attention given to the Old Testament.

Roman pride was based, not on the intellect, but on the character of man. To be a Roman citizen meant to be heir of a great tradition, and a tradition founded on fundamental virtues, such as courage, honesty and chastity.

When we turn to the Jews the difference is incalculable. For them the first and overwhelming thought is of the majesty of God. They are amazed that He should condescend to regard the doings of men, and to be chosen by Him to do His work.

DISCUSSES REICH COLONY AMBITIONS

West Africa, a weekly newspaper, comments as follows on the German admbitions for colonies in Africa:

It is a difficult time, for British people who wish to see fair play towards Germany and towards Africans. They can but hope to see, either Herr Hitler eating his words as Mr. Bennett in Canada has just eaten his, and as other politicians eat theirs, and sweeping away the civic disabilities of the Jewish and other minorities; or a regime worthier of old German ideals of liberty and justice replacing his. When either of these things happens British public opinion will be for a reopening on the Versailles decision on colonies and an end of the pretenses that Mandate areas are not in essentials annexations.

BRITISH MAGAZINE SEES BIG JNF LOAN

The Near East and India, the semi-official organ of the British Colonial Office, discusses the loan to the Jewish National Fund:

The favorable attention which Jewish construction efforts in Palestine is commanding in the City of London has resulted in the success of negotiations leading to the grant of a new loan to a Zionist institution. This time it is the Jewish National Fund which, it is stated, will receive a long-term loan of a far higher amount than the $2,500,000 recently granted by Lloyds Bank, Ltd., to the Jewish Agency and Keren Hayesod (Palestine Foundation Fund).
