Jerusalem (Mar. 10)
Merchants, artisans and laborers in Jerusalem will join in a general strike on Wednesday as protest against the high rentals in the city, it was announced today.
The strikers, who comprise practically the entire Jerusalem population, demand that the government regulate the rentals in such a way that landlords will not be permitted to speculate for higher rentals. A reduction in the present rents is also demanded by the strikers.
An ultimatum was given today to Dr. Hussein Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, and to Major Campbell, district commissioner for Palestine government, demanding they institute rent regulation in the city not later than Tuesday. A mass meeting was called today of all tenants in the city for Tuesday evening, at which Wednesday’s general strike will be officially proclaimed.
