Immigration restrictions suggested by Congressman Dickstein of New York to bar alien actors from entering the United States unless they were of distinguished merit or ability, were vigorously fought at a hearing before the House Immigration Committee by Congressman Celler of New York as well as by Brock Pemberton, well known New York theatrical producer.
Mr. Pemberton said that the restrictions proposed by Congressman Dickstein would impair “a renaissance of the theatre in America.” Congressman Celler stated that if the bill introduced by Congressman Dickstein were passed, England and other countries would then bar American actors. He warned that if the bill became a law many theatres and moving picture houses in America would be affected.
