That Helene Mayer, famous German-Jewish fencing star now living in Oakland, Cal., was forced to accept the invitation of Dr. Theodor Lewald to participate in the Olympic games out of fear that her relatives in Germany would be held as hostages if she refused, was the opinion being widely expressed here today.

Dr. Lowald’s announcement that he had received Miss Mayer’s cabled acceptance of his invitation did not appear in the German press.
