The recommendation that the League of Nations Council send an investigating commission to Danzig to probe alleged violations of the Free City’s constitution by the Nazi-controlled Senate is contained in the report of Sean Lester, Irish League Commissioner for Danzig, to the session of the council which opened today.
If the Senate persists in violating the constitution, Mr. Lester suggests that “other means” be taken to preserve constitutional government in Danzig.
In his report, he accuses the Senate of a number of specific violations, including the dissolving of labor organizations and submitting to the dictation of an illegal Nazi district leader named Forster.
Mr. Lester declares that the Senate has also flouted the constitution by holding only seven sessions lasting one hour each, suppressing freedom of the press, arresting opposition deputies despite the immunity guaranteed them, caricaturing the equality of rights of citizens despite his continued protests and treating the recommendations of the council with contempt.
The legality of the last Danzig election is also attacked in the report. The report will be considered by the council with petitions from opposition parties containing similar charges.
