Calm was restored here today after reports of an impending Nazi putsch failed to materialize. Great interest was expressed in yesterday’s debate on the Danzig question in the League of Nations Council at Geneva.
Reporting the incident in which Arthur Greiser, head of the Nazi-controlled Danzig Senate gave British Foreign Secretary a Hitler salute and thumbed his nose at the press gallery, the Danziger Vorposton said Jews had provoked him. It stated that the press gallery was filled with Jews and German emigres, who interrupted Greiser’s speech with hilarious laughter.
The Association of Polish Citizens issued a statement in the name of the entire Polish population of the Free City demanding continuation of League of Nations supervision over Danzig.
The statement expressed “fullest disagreement” with Albert Foerster, Nazi commissar for the Free City, in his campaign against High Commissioner Sean Lester and the League.
