H. Pereira Mendes, rabbi emeritus of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, proposed that American Jews set aside one week of the month as a “sacrifice week” during which period funds conserved by cutting down home expenses to absolute minimum would be sent to the aid of persecuted Polish Jews, the American Committee Appeal for the Relief of Jews in Poland announced today.
The National Council of Young Israel has pledged its support for the $1,000,000 campaign, it was stated. The Appeal coincidentally made public a letter from Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein expressing regret that “the great publicity given to the German situation has overshadowed the minds of our people in regard to Poland. There is no more pressing need today, for help to our brethren abroad, that I know of than that for the relief of Jews in Poland.”
