Presented with The Jewish Forum’s Einstein Medal for Humanitarian Services, James G. McDonald, chairman of President Roosevelt’s advisory committee on refugees, told a dinner sponsored by the Committee of One Hundred at the Hotel Astor last night that not until Christians as well as Jews understand that the things they hold dear are threatened, “will there be an adequate response to enable refugees from Central Europe to be cared for.” He deplored the tendency to regard refugees as “liabilities,” saying history showed we were a “country of refugees.” Governor Lehman, Jeremiah T. Mahoney, James W. Gerard, George Gordon Battle and Representative Emanuel Celler were among the other speakers.
