A paradoxical situation is arising from the workings of the new law for unification of marriage divorce laws, effective Aug. I. the legislation, enacted July 9, prohibits the previously-permitted divorces between Jews by mutual consent. The courts are now rejecting divorce applications filed previously but not yet adjudicated, including numerous cases where rabbinical divorces have already been granted after the failure of the rabbis’ conciliation attempts. thus a situation arises in which many Jews are religiously but not civilly divorced. Jews are also affected by the general prohibition on legal separations by mutual consent.
