A special statement has been issued by the Government of Victoria denying that Jewish immigrants were cutting the wages of sweated labor, which had been charged by some newspapers. The press campaign against Jewish immigrants was joined by The Argus which printed two unsigned letters, one of them demanding a prohibition on “indiscriminate Jewish immigration” and the other asserting that Jews were cutting wages of sweated labor. The newspapers The Age and The Herald displayed cartoons depicting streams of immigrants entering Australia with Immigration Department officials standing by indifferently.
