SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland (Sep. 13)
Care of refugees residing in Switzerland land should not be an exclusively Jewish affair, but a matter of swiss concern, Dr. Heinrich Rothmund, director of the Swiss Police Department and Swiss delegate to the recent Evian refugee-aid conference, declared today.
“That corresponds to the Swiss attitude to people in distress,” Dr. Rothmund told a congress of Swiss living abroad. “No matter whether he is a Swiss or a foreigner, a Protestant, Catholic or Jew, he is a human being needing help.”
He denounced “unworthy anti-Semitism” and warned against making political capital of the refugee problem. He announced that there are about 2,000 Jewish refugees now in Switzerland who will be gradually evacuated with the help of Jewish organizations, since Switzerland is only a transit country.
