Coughlin Talks Not “approved.” Archbishop Mooney Holds

The weekly Catholic News today quoted Archbishop Edward Mooney of Detroit, head of the Diocese in which Father Coughlin’s church is located, as indicating that Father Coughlin had “permission” but not “approval” for his radio addresses. The Archbishop stated:

“The permission of church authorities to publish an article or broadcast an address definitely does not imply approval of the contents of that article or address; much less does it make the article or address an authoritative statement of the catholic position on the subject treated. The permission in question merely certifies that the article or address does not manifestly violate existing church regulations governing writings or utterances which are to be submitted for review.”
