San Salvador to Bar 50 Refugees Holding $500 Visas

Download PDF for this date

Fifty Jewish refugees, due to arrive at San Salvador tomorrow on the German ship Portland, have been ordered barred on the ground that their passports bear fraudulent visas issued by honorary Salvadorean consuls in Budapest and Amsterdam, who charged $500 for each person, the New York Times reported today from San Salvador. The honorary consuls have been discharged and their successors warned not to issue visas to refugees without first consulting the Foreign Office.
