Hundreds of refugees among the thousands who had sought haven in Lithuania from war-ravaged Poland were rounded up at random in Wilno and an undetermined number were immediately transported to the Soviet frontier. British and French diplomatic efforts to forestall the deportations were of no avail, it was reported.
A communique issued by the official Lithuanian Telegraphic into German-occupied Poland, adding that the authorities “by repeated demarches” were seeking “voluntary repatriation” of refugees.
