Merger of the New York campaigns of the American ORT Federation and the United Jewish Appeal was announced today at an all-day conference of the Labor and Peoples Committee of the ORT.
The merger, it was emphasized, applies only to the local organizations and does not affect the campaigns of both groups outside of the Greater New York area.
Announcement of the merger followed a series of conferences held by committees representing the ORT and the U.J.A. A joint statement on the development was issued by Edward M.M. Warburg, co-chairman of the New York U.J.A. campaign, and Edgar Salinger, chairman of the local ORT drive.
Delegates representing trade unions, fraternal and other Jewish organizations attended the conference, called to discuss the position of Jews in central and eastern Europe. Scheduled speakers included Lord Marley, British Laborite leader; Adolph Held, president of the Amalgamated Bank, and David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
