Comment was aroused in the Chilean press by the help-wanted advertisement of the local German department store, Oberpaur, which said that only “pure Aryans” need apply. The advertisement was published in El Murcurio, Chile’s largest newspaper.
La Critica, leftist evening newspaper, declared editorially: “Chileans will not stand idly by while Germans in Chile seek to introduce racial prejudice. We do not wish our democratic country to be poisoned by Mr. Oberpaur, who could not make a living in his own fatherland and therefore emigrated to Chile.”
