The current issue of Father Charles E. Coughlin’s Social Justice resumes a distinct anti-Semitic character after having more or less played down the Jewish issue in recent weeks. The general tenor of the edition is identification of the Jews and “international bankers” with Government defense plans and the movement to aid the Allies.
One article speaks of the New Deal, “upon whose brow destiny has woven the bay leaves of Mosaic deliverance.” Another item speaks of “the Rothschild clan” as meeting in Paris to discuss the affairs of the Suez Canal and predicts that they will seek refuge in the United States rather than don uniforms and fight the Germans. The Rev. Leon Birkhead, national director of the Friends of Democracy, is called a “Gentile Jew.”
An editorial is devoted to intimating that the United States, although she mitigate her “immigration laws to receive the wandering Jew,” is not equally interested in British, Belgian and French children. Another editorial is given over to denouncing Rabbi Stephen S. Wise as an “erstwhile public consorted with Reds.”
