NEW YORK (Jul. 4)
Proposals to ban further naturalization of aliens and to create a “B class of citizenship” for those already naturalized are advanced by Westbrook Pegler, widely-syndicated columnist of the New York World-Telegram.
In yesterday’s column, Pegler declares that “our immigrants since the first World War have not contributed much to the peace and progress of the United States” and that “the newer immigration has largely consisted of people who sought only safety and regarded this country as a refugee and nothing else.”
In Wednesday’s column, he urges a constitutional amendment to the effect “that a naturalized citizen could not hold Federal office at all and trust to the several states to adopt similar restrictions as to state and municipal office.” He adds: “True, that would create a B class of citizenship, but I see no objection to that in view of our experience and especially in view of the doubtful quality of much of the immigration.”
