LONDON (Aug. 22)
First services were held today in the rebuilt South Broughton Synagogue in Manchester, which was severely damaged during a Nazi air raid. Repairs on the synagogue have just been completed.
Rabbi J. Chesner, who has been ill for several months from injuries suffered during an air raid, in his first sermon in the rebuilt synagogue stressed the spirit of self-sacrifice shown by the community in providing funds for the repairs under the present difficult conditions. “The savage oppressor can destroy our buildings but he can never destroy our spirit,” the Rabbi declared.
