The Jewish population of Palestine has reached the half-million mark at the start of the Jewish New Year, the Vaad Leumi announced here today reviewing its activities for the past year.

The statement of the Vaad Leumi points out that more than 11,000 Palestine Jews are serving in the British forces at the present time and have participated in campaigns “from Dunkirk to Tobruk.”

In the field of education the Vaad Leumi has spent £450,000 during the year, providing facilities for 58,692 pupils in 403 Kenesset Israel schools. Of these 38,605 pupils attended schools in towns while 20,087 attended settlement schools. The Kofer Hayishub, the voluntary defense tax, provided £44,000 this year, all of which has been spent to strengthen Palestine’s defense, the Vaad Leumi states.
