Addressing Temple Beth Jacob, at at a ceremony which marked the burning of the mortgage, Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president of Hebrew Union College, declared that should Palestine be granted statehood, the states of American Jews would immediately change, as they would be classed as “foreigners” in the land of their birth.
Dr. Morgenstern pleaded against intense nationalism, declared that Judaism is universal and is the cradle of all religions and of true democracy and justice, Speaking on the topic “How to Achieve Jewish Unity,” Dr. Morgenstern declared that Palestine is not the solution to the Jewish problem. He said he doubted that Jews in Palestine would ever be granted statehood and that the physical problem of transporting 2,500,000 Jews would prove an almost insurmountable task. He declared however, that if the Peace Conference established a Jewish State he would pray for its success.
