Rudolf Sonneborn, New York industrialist, has been elected to the post of chairman of the National Council of the United Palestine Appeal, it was announced today by Dr. James G. Heller, national chairman of the organization. The National Council is composed of 3,000 leaders of American Jewry who, in their local communities, are responsible for the raising of funds for the U.P.A.
The Administrative Committee of the U.P.A., at a meeting yesterday, heard a report from Dr. Heller to the effect that during the six months between October, 1943 and April 1, 1944 the sum of $9,239,483 was spent in Palestine for development purposes by the Palestine Foundation Fund and Jewish National Fund, which receive their American support from the United Palestine Appeal. Dr. Heller also reported that the United Palestine Appeal has submitted to the War Refugee Board a large-scale program designed to speed the rescue and relief of refugees in Europe and to assist their immigration into Palestine.
