Jewish Relief Group in Argentina Sends Funds to J.D.C. for Aid to Balkan Refugees

The Council of Jewish Aid to War Victims in Buenos Aires has contributed $15,000 to the American Joint Distribution Committee for the transportation of Balkan Jewish refugees from Turkey to Palestine, it was announced here today. Simon Mirelman, Argentine industrialist and community leader, is president of the Buenos Aires organization.

In making the announcement, Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C., pointed out that “it is heartening at this time to realize that Jews in many countries feel a responsibility for their suffering brethren abroad and are taking practical steps to bring them aid.” Mr. Hyman added that while the main support for the work of the J.D.C. still comes from Jews in the United States, an increasing number of contributions are being made by Jewish communities in Latin America, including Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. “These contributions are especially gratifying,” Mr. Hyman said, “because part of the funds come form refugees who in the last eleven years were brought to havens in South America as victims of Nazi oppression themselves. Many of them were helped by J.D.C. and now they are able to assist in bringing aid to others not so fortunate as they.”

JEWS IN ARGENTINA CONTRIBUTE 1,000,000 PESOS TO BRITISH FUND

BUENOS AIRES, (JTA-Airmail) — More than 1,000,000 pesos (about $250,000) have been contributed to the British Patriotic Front by the Argentine Jewish Committee to Aid Great Britain during the last forty months, it was announced here by the Committee.

The announcement said that twelve Red Cross ambulances carrying the inscription ‘Comite Israelita de la Argentina pro Ayda a Gran Bretana” will be placed in service on various fighting fronts. The Committee also made contributions to the Inter-Allied Commission of Coordination and to the Wings for Winston Fund, the announcement stated.
