Messages congratulating Sir Harold MacMichael, outgoing High Commissioner of Palestine, on his escape from the attempt made by unknown terrorists to assassinate him, are still pouring in from various organizations. They include a cable from Dr. Chaim Weizmann and a message from Chief Rabbi Herzog of Palestine.
Cabling in his capacity as president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, Dr. Weinmann’s message said; “Allow me to express my horror at the hideous crime of the attempt on your life. I rejoice at your escape and that of Lady MacMichael, but I grieve that she should have been exposed to so terrible an experience and for the injuries inflicted upon the members of your staff. My ardent wish is that the evildoers should be speedily discovered and that the responsibility be fixed upon the guilty.”
The High Commissioner also received a message from the New Zionist Organization in Palestine deploring the crime and expressing hope that Sir Harold and the two wounded officials would soon recover. Similar messages were received by the High Commissioner from Jewish municipalities and local councils in all parts of Palestine.
The Jewish Agency sent a message to the Colonial Office in London expressing “horror and concern” over the attempt on Sir Harold’s life, as well as grief for the injuries sustained by the members of his staff. “The Jewish Agency,” the message concluded, “trusts that the perpetrators of the dastardly crime will be brought speedily to justice.” The entire Jewish press in Palestine expresses itself in a similar vein.
