French Government Orders the Return of Looted Movable Property to Jews and Others

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

A decree providing for the restitution of furniture, clothes, books, jewels and other movable property confiscated or stolen from Jews and others during the German occupation of France, is published today in the official gazette.

Indentified property must be claimed by the owners before a justice of the peace within one year after the end of the war. Property, the owners of which cannot be identified, is to be given to specified national welfare organizations for distribution among needy persons whose property was destroyed during the occupation.

Rene Toupin, who translated German anti-Jewish literature into French during the German occupation, was sentenced yesterday to five years at hard labor for helping the Nazis disseminate anti-Jewish propaganda.

The French authorities this week suspended the newspaper "Unser Stimme," organ of the Jewish Socialist Bund. No reason for the suspension was given.
