Confiscated Jewish Communal Property in Slovakia Returned to Council of Jewish Communities

The property of the liquidated central Jewish Organization of Slovakia, which was established under the pro-Nazi regime of Father Tise, was today transferred to the new Council of Jewish Communities, set up in Bratislava under the leadership of Chief Rabbi Armun Frieder.

A decree published today provides that the new central body of the Jewish communities in Slovakia must “hold Jewish religious ceremonies in the Slovak language insofar as this does not run counter to the usages of the Hebrew religion.” The decree also provides that the chief rabbi will have to cooperate with a representative of the Slovak education department, assisted by an advisory committee of six, to promote the Slovak language among Jews.

The Zionist organization in Slovakia has been authorized by the authorities to begin functioning, but is not yet in a position to conduct any activities, chiefly because of the lack of suitable promises.
