A delegation of nine members of the Central Jewish Committee of Poland, headed by Dr. Dail Sommerstein, chairman of the committee, arrived here today en route to the United States.
Speaking at a mass meeting commemorating the Battle of the Warsaw Ghetto, Henryk Strasburger, Polish Ambassador to Great Britain, today condemned anti-Semitism and assured the Jewish people that they had the sympathy of the Polish Government in their efforts to establish a Jewish nation.
Ambassador Strasburger said that he hoped the Jewish people would be able to develop their peaceful national culture and “be able to consolidate the Jewish nation in accordance with promises made not so long ago. May the promise of Genesis, that the Jews will be a great nation, come true in our time,” he declared.
Philip Piratin, Communist member of Parliament, warned the meeting that it would take time before anti-Semitism would be eliminated from Poland, and called for support of the Polish Government and Jewish reconstruction in Poland. Samuel Silverman, Labor M.P., stressed that the Jewish martyrs “had died for a better world,” and the nations of the world must realize that the Jews must have a place to rebuild their lives as a free nation. Acting Chief Rabbi Harris M. Lazarus also spoke.
