“united Service for New Americans” Organized by Merger of Nrs, Service to Foreign Born

The United Service for New Americans, an organization formed by the merger of the National Refugee Service and the National Service to Foreign Born division of the National Council of Jewish Women, was formally organized at the first meeting today of its board of directors at the Hotel Commodore.

The U.S.N.A. will take over all the functions of its predecessor agencies in aiding survivors of Nazi persecution reaching America under President Truman’s directive. The program of the new group includes assistance and guidance to Americans who wish to bring relatives from Europe to this country; meeting the arrivals at the dock and routing them to their relatives in other cities; resettlement of the immigrants in communities through the nation, in cooperation with local agencies; retraining and employment placement and naturalization and assistance in learning the language and customs of the United States.

At the meeting of the board of directors the following officers were elected: william Rosenwald and Mrs. Joseph M. Welt, honorary presidents; Joseph P. Chamberlain, honorary chairman of the board; Edwin Rosenberg, president, and Mrs. Irving M. Engel, chairman of the board.
