Rabbi Bela Berend was yesterday sentenced to a ten-year prison sentence for cooperating with the Gestapo during the Nazi occupation of Hungary.

The court announced that it had taken into account Rabbi Berend’s plea that he had cooperated with the Nazis in order to be able to help the Jews. Rabbi Berend, who fainted when he heard the sentence, will appeal to a higher court.

Dr. Janos Szuecs, chief prosecutor of the Peoples Court, has announced that peasants who took over Jewish lands during the pro-Nazi regime cannot be prosecuted under the criminal code, but that compensation suits can be instituted under civil law.
