The need for “intelligent, carefully considered group legislation in order to combat the threat of racism” was emphasized yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Vincent L. Leibell in freeing William Hunt Diedrich, internationally recognized sculptor, who was arrested on a charge of improper use of the mail for distribution of anti-Semitic material. Leibell pointed out that Diedrich’s attacks were made against the Jewish people as a group, rather than against individuals and that there was no law against group libel.
