Mobs Turn on Jews; 12 Injured in Alexandria; Ask Confiscation of Jews’ Property

Arab rioters in various Egyptian cities today de##rated against Egyptian Jews and the United States Government, following the is## last night of a call for a holy war by the faculty of the most famous Mohamed##iversity in the Middle East.In Alexandria mobs estimated to number about 10,000 swept through the Jewish ##ess center, attacking Jews and a number of stores before they were brought ## control by police. At least twelve Jews were injured, one seriously, before ##iots subsided. A crowd of several hundred were forcibly prevented by police ## tearing down the U.S. flag in front of the American embassy building.

In Cairo, where another mob demonstrated in front of the U.S. embassy and ## stones at it, a student deputation called at King Farouk’s palace and left ##orandum petitioning the government to confiscate Jewish property in Egypt. In ##h circles, which have been promised government protection against mob violence ###scriminatory legislation, concern was expressed that the government might be fired to give way before political pressure.Chief Rabbi Nahoum Effendi, queried by Egyptian newsmen as to whether Jews ##d “fight in Palestine,” replied that Egyptian Jews were surprised that their attitude toward the Egyptian nation should be questioned. Pointing out that the ## and government have promised that the Jews would have the full protection of ## law and would enjoy the same rights as other Egyptians, Rabbi Nahoum said the ## were subject to the same obligations as other Egyptians.

Reports from Aden, British crown colony on the Arabian coast near Yemen, ## that one person was killed and a score injured last night during riots following Arab attacks on Jews.

Various reports from other Arab states tend to indicate that the crest of the wave of violence against Jews is passing. In Damascus police guarded Jewish ## and shops, while in Iraq the government appealed for an end to demonstrations. ## Transjordan, where rioting was kept to a minimum, the legislature adopted a resolution promising aid to Arab interests in Palestine fighting the establishment of a Jewish state.
