Haganah Kills 20 Arabs in Attack on Guerrilla Base Near Tel Aviv; Jewish Plane Shot at

Twenty Arabs were killed and many others wounded at night when a strong Haganah patrol penetrated the Arab village of Birabas, north Tel Aviv, and “blew up four building. The Jews lost one man killed and five Funded.

Birabas is the base from which daily attacks have been launched nearby on Jewish settlement of Magdiel for more than a week. Earlier in the week, a Stern mp detachment invaded the village and blasted three houses.

The British Army today reported that a Jewish pilot flying a plane east of Aviv was fired on, but landed safely although one bullet had penetrated the crocket of his light plane. An Arab report said that the plane had been shot down after strafing Jaffa with machinegun fire, A third version, released by the Palestine police, said that a police armored car had spotted a Jewish plane flying low over Abu ##ebir, an Arab village on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, and that the pilot had dropped several hand grenades and fired on the village.

The Stern Group last night blasted several houses in Lifta, an Arab suburb Jerusalem, from; which a cumber of attacks have been made on traffic to and from Tel Aviv. Four Arabs were reported killed and three wounded, but none of the Jews hurt. In Tel Aviv the Haganah was said to be holding for investigation two non-Jewish Poles who had been discovered in the city armed with pistols.

High Commissioner Sir Alan G. Cunningham today called on all the inhabitants Palestine to cooperate with the advance party of the United Nations Palestine Commission. Pointing out that the members of the party have come to this country to study economic and other problems, Cunningham urged that they be granted cooperation, respect and immunity as befits the representatives of the highest international authority. The Arab press today reported that the recent burst of Arab ambush activity the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem road was the re3ult of guerrilla attempts to intercept centers of the U.N. group.

Palestine Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog today appealed to the U.N. Security Council stand fast and support partition. “I appeal to the members of the Security Council to remember the momentous issue Involved in their deliberations–whether man-1 shall follow the inner summon of its conscience or succumb to political expediency,” he said.

The Royal Air Force has announced that it is prepared to sell installations land at Aquir, Sarafand, Kiryat Motzkin, the Einshemer Field and quarters for married military personnel in the Katamon quarter of Jerusalem.
