Herbert H. Lehman, former Governor of New York and one of the outstanding leaders of American Jewry – who has been active for many years in the United Jewish Appeal, the Joint Distribution Committee, the American Jewish Committee and other important Jewish organizations – will observe his 70th birthday on Sunday.

In an interview here today Gov. Lehman said that the reversal of the U.S. position on Palestine “was tragically unfair” to the Jews in Palestine and to those Jews in Europe who have no other place to which they can go in large numbers. “I believe the U.S. plan of trusteeship for Palestine, instead of lessening violence and disorder, nay actually Increase it, “he declared.

“I have always “been an ardent supporter of the United nations as an instrument of peace,”, he said, “But their tragic action in refusing to Implement their own decision on partition has dealt the U.N, another grievous blow from which they will [ hove difficulty recovering.”
