A moving tribute to Rabbi Joshua Liebman marked the solemn meeting of the House of Representatives today as spokesmen for both major parties deplored the death of the internationally famous rabbi and author as a blow to the “forces of decency and peace.”

Rep. Jacob K. Javits told a hushed chamber that Dr. Liebman was a “sweet and gentle soul, a distinguished American beloved alike by his co-religionists and those of other faiths. At 41, he was already a national figure known to millions through his Sunday broadcasts.”

Rep. John McCormack eulogized Dr. Liebman as “an outstanding American respected by all. His death is a sad and serious blow to forces of decency and peace.” He added: “Catholics and Protestants join our Jewish brethren in deep feeling and respect over the death of Rabbi Liebman.”
