U.S. Greatness is Measured by Its Practice of Racial, Religious Equality, Truman Says

A call to the people of the United States to observe Brotherhood Week, sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews, was issued today by President Truman. The observance of the Week will start on February 19.

Accepting honorary chairmanship of the Brotherhood Week, President Truman urged in his statement that Americans should “ponder well the true meaning of brotherhood” in the light of the world struggle today, the central issue of which, he said, is respect for human dignity.

“America is dedicated to the conviction that all people are entitled to the gift of God of equal rights and freedom even though they may differ in religious persuasion, in social and political views or in racial origin,” the President pointed out. “Our greatness is and will be measured by the degree of our recognition of this fundamental truth.”
