The Haifa refineries will suspend all work tomorrow morning and 400 workers are to be discharged, Reuters reported from Israel. The decision was due to the impossibility of getting supplies of crude oil which had to come from South America and be paid for with dollars, the report said. The refineries, owned by Consolidated Refineries of London, closed down originally when the British Army evacuated Palestine. Two months later they were taken over by Israel authorities who returned them to British management last March.
