JERUSALEM (Jun. 15)
The government today introduced in the Knesset a citizenship bill containing a number of revolutionary reforms such as equal status for women and for illegitimate children who, under Jewish religious law, cannot be members of the Jewish community.
Both aspects of the new bill are expected to encounter stiff opposition from the Religious Bloc. The bill also provides for immediate citizenship for every inhabitant of Israel as well as for authorized immigrants. One of the features of the new citizenship bill is that the acquisition of Israel citizenship does not depend on the Israeli’s giving up of his former citizenship.
