Premier Ben Gurion Accepts Stephen Wise Award Offered by American Jewish Congress

Premier David Ben Gurion of Israel announced his ##cceptance of the Stephen S. Wise Award for his contributions to the establishment and development of the Jewish state, in a letter to Rabbi Irving Miller, president of the American Jewish Congress. The award is made annually by the A.J.C. to four persons who have achieved outstanding records in furthering civil liberties in the U.S., the interests of Jewish communities overseas, Jewish scholarship and development of Israel–the spheres in which the late Dr. Wise was vitally interested. In his letter, the Premier of Israel declared: “I appreciate from the depth of my heart the achicvements you credit me with in the award citation. However, truth compels me to tell you that whatever I have done, I have done as one of the pioneers of Israel. Not a single achievement which you ascribe to me cannot be attributed as well to thousands and tens of thousands of my colleagues who, humbly and devotedly for decades, met their obligations to their land and people. This is especially so in the case of the tens of thousands of soldiers of the Israeli army.”
