Admiral Mountbatten, British commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, yesterday entertained Premier David Ben Gurion, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Yigal Yadin and Navy Commander Mordecai Limon at lunch. Earlier, Commander Limon and Gen. Yadin inspected a guard of honor aboard the Admiral’s flagship, H.M.S. Surprise, in Haifa harbor.
The secrecy surrounding the movement of Admiral Mountbatten has confused officials of the Committee for Peace which called an anti-Mountbatten demonstration for yesterday in Tel Aviv. However, the Admiral and the fleet had moved to Haifa and this rally, like another in Haifa Tuesday, also fizzled when it was learned that the British were in another city.
In all, some 250 Mapam and Communist Party members showed up for yesterday’s demonstration, carrying posters calling the Admiral the “executor of the plan to convert the Middle East into a Western base.” Other posters urged the Admiral to “go home” and to “take McDaniel with you.” Bruce McDaniel is the American technical aid director in Israel.
