Plans for construction on the new Independence Mall development here of a replica of the original synagogue of Mikveh Israel Congregation, oldest Jewish congregation in the city, were announced here. The synagogue would thus be part of a major development in which the United States Government is participating with the City of Philadelphia in creating a center around Independence Hall dedicated to the founders of the Republic.
Jews throughout the United States will be asked to participate in the project which will mark the tercentenary of Jewish settlement in the United States. A synagogue, library and auditorium will be housed in a building modelled after the original Colodial structure which housed Mikveh Israel over two centuries ago. The building will be located on or near the Mall, neighboring historic institutions such as Independence Hall with which the synagogue saw the birth of the nation.
