Jordan Reported Rejecting Israel’s Demand for Direct Negotiations

The Jordan Cabinet met for four and one-half hours last night to discuss the Israeli demand for direct Israel-Jordan talks as provided for in Article XII of the armistice agreement, it was reported here today from the Old City.

The reports stated that the Jordan Ministers had decided to reject the Israeli demand for high level talks. They are said to have taken the position that all disputes can be adjusted within the Mixed Armistice Commission.

The Arab radio today reported that Admiral Jerauld Wright, Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Naval Forces in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, has made approaches to Syria and Lebanon to participate in a western defense base plan outside the framework of the Arab League.
