John D. Jernegan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, held a long meeting this week-end with the Syrian Ambassador in which Israel’s Bnot Yaacov hydroelectric project and questions of regional water development were discussed.

A report from Damascus received here quoted the Syrian newspaper “Al Fayhaa” as stating that the American, British, and French Ambassadors in Amman have notified the Jordanian Government that “important economic aid” could be expected if Jordan agrees to direct talks with Israel. Another newspaper, “Al Binaa,” reported however, that Jordan has referred the question of direct talks with Israel to the Arab League Council which will meet shortly to consider the matter.
