Twenty members of a wartime Dortmund police unit were today acquitted by a local court of charges of murdering a number of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. The unit, “Dortmund Police Battalion 61, ” was assigned to guarding the ghetto.

The court ruled that because of their level of intelligence and education they did not know that they were committing crimes when they executed Jewish hostages in the ghetto on orders from superior officers. The 20 former officers and non-commissioned officers were indicted after many years of procrastination. They were represented by 12 defense attorneys.
